How do you know if your vehicle is taxed, MOT'd and insured?

As of September 2014 you don't need to display a tax disc in your car. So how do you know that it's taxed?

You don't receive MOT reminders, many people don't realise that they are driving without a valid MOT until they need to tax their car.

You could be driving illegally for upto a year! Many people think their car is insured but what happens if the insurance company doesn't auto renew your policy?

Check if your vehicle is taxed and MOT'd?

You will need your:

Registration number and make of your vehicle.

Need to tax your car?

You will need either:

The 16 digit reference number on your vehicle tax renewal letter (V11)
The 11 digit reference number on your log book (V5C)
The 12 digit reference number on your New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) (if you've just bought the vehicle)

Check your MOT History

You will need your:

Registration number

Tell DVLA you have bought or sold a vehicle

There's no need to fill out the V5 form and send off to DVLA anymore. You can now do this online by following the link below.

You will need:

Your V5C form or the V5C/2

 

Private number plates Add and remove from cars.

Apply to take off a number

You can apply online or by post. It costs £80. You must have the vehicle’s log book (V5C).

If the vehicle’s not in your name, you have to apply by post. This is typically for lease vehicles 

Once you have completed the the process online, the number will be removed immediately.

Assign a private number to a vehicle

To assign a private (personalised) number to a vehicle, you need one of the following:

  • a V750 certificate of entitlement - you’ll get this if you buy a private number
  • a V778 retention document or online reference number - you’ll get one of these if you take a number from another vehicle you own.

 

Driving Licence renewal

You can renew your driving licence by going onto the government website.

You can Renew your full driving licence and your provisional driving licence

The cost to renew your licence is £14 when you apply online.

You must renew a photocard licence every 10 years - you’ll receive a reminder before your current licence ends.

To renew your licence online you need either:

If you do not have either of these, you’ll need to apply at a Post Office or by post.

You’ll need:

  • your UK passport (either current or expired within the past 12 months) or the document you used to set up your online immigration status
  • your current driving licence (if you have it)
  • your National Insurance number (if you know it)
  • addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years

Changing your Driving Licence address

You can apply online

Change the address on either:

  • your full driving licence
  • your provisional driving licence

It does not cost anything to change your address with DVLA.

You can still drive while you’re waiting for your new licence

You need:

  • your driving licence
  • to be a resident of Great Britain - there’s a different process in Northern Ireland
  • to give the addresses you’ve lived at in the last 3 years
  • to not be banned from driving

Provide your driving licence number, National Insurance number and passport number if you know them.
