Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV's ) are the biggest growing sector in the car market place, with pretty much all the manufacturers having one or more SUV's in their line up. Even Ferrari and Aston Martin have an SUV.
This year SUV's take up 7 of the top 10 most popular cars and have the top 3 with the Nissan Qashqai in 3rd, the Kia Sportage in 2nd and the Ford Puma in 1st. place.
So what is an SUV?
SUV, or Sport Utility Vehicle, is a type of vehicle that combines elements of road-going passenger cars with features from off-road vehicles. Here are the key characteristics of an SUV:
High Ground Clearance:
SUVs typically have a higher ground clearance than regular cars, allowing them to handle rougher terrain.
Two-Wheel Drive (2WD), Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD):
While many SUVs come with Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD) systems, a significant number are also available with Two-Wheel Drive (2WD). These 2WD SUVs are typically either front-wheel drive (FWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD), depending on the model.
The main reasons people opt for 2WD SUVs include:
Urban Driving: Many SUV owners use their vehicles primarily for city driving, where off-road capabilities aren't necessary. For them, the elevated driving position, spacious interior, and styling of an SUV are more important.
Cost and Efficiency: 2WD SUVs are usually less expensive than their 4WD or AWD counterparts. They also tend to be lighter, which can improve fuel efficiency.
Maintenance: Vehicles with 2WD have fewer mechanical components related to the drivetrain, which can lead to lower maintenance costs over time.
So, while 4WD and AWD systems are valuable for those needing off-road capability or better traction in harsh weather, many drivers choose 2WD SUVs because they provide the same high driving position and practicality at a lower cost and without the extra complexity.
Spacious Interior:
SUVs often have a roomy interior and can have multiple rows of seats, allowing them to carry more passengers or cargo.
Versatility:
SUVs are designed for versatility, capable of driving both on highways and off-road. They are popular for their utility, often used for family transportation, outdoor activities, and towing.
Robust Build:
The design of SUVs tends to be sturdier, which contributes to their capability in various driving conditions.
SUVs come in various sizes, from compact to full-size, and have become one of the most popular vehicle types globally due to their practicality and adaptability.
Fuel types
When considering what type of engine to choose, you have several options: Petrol, Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), or Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). Here’s a brief overview of each:
-
Petrol (or Diesel) Engines: These traditional engines run continuously and are often equipped with a start-stop system that turns off the engine when the vehicle is stationary, like at traffic lights. This feature helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
-
Hybrid (HEV): A hybrid vehicle combines a petrol or diesel engine with a larger battery that is charged by the engine. This setup allows for short periods of electric-only driving, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions compared to conventional engines.
-
Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV): PHEVs come with a larger battery compared to standard hybrids, enabling them to travel over 70 miles on a single charge in some models. They also feature a petrol or diesel engine, which can either work alongside the battery or operate independently when the battery is depleted.
-
Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): BEVs run solely on electricity and produce zero CO2 emissions. They rely entirely on a large battery for power, making them a zero-emissions choice for environmentally-conscious drivers.
Each option has its benefits depending on your driving needs and preferences.
So here are a selection of SUV's that are both popular and good to own and drive.
Cupra Formentor
Cupra have updated the Formentor with new interior and exterior features.
The big change comes with the new Hybrid engine. You can now get the new Formentor in either a 204ps or 272ps EHybrid Plug in Hybrid engine

Looking for an Electric SUV?
Switching from petrol or diesel to an electric vehicle can feel like a big change, especially when it comes to understanding power and capacity. Unlike traditional engines, electric vehicles (EVs) measure these differently. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- kW (Kilowatts): This represents the power output of the electric motor, similar to the BHP (Brake Horsepower) in petrol or diesel engines.
- kWh (Kilowatt-Hours): This indicates the battery's capacity, or how much energy it can store, akin to the size of a fuel tank.
